Résumé : According to the Japanese Medical Service Law, hospitals are defined as facilities capable of accommodating 20 or more patients, have a hospital director, fixed number of physicians, dentist, pharmacist, nurses and other employees, and have structures and facilities including examination rooms, treatment rooms, operating rooms and so forth. Categories of hospitals include general hospitals, psychiatric hospitals and tuberculosis sanatoriums. In order to ameliorate the cost effectiveness of hospital services, functional differenciation is also being promoted in the form of acute stage medical care, refractory disease medical care, palliative care, rehabilitation, long-term convalescence and home medical care. In Japan, a formal referral system has not been established between hospitals and clinics, while on the contrary, competitive relationships may exist between the two. (résumé d'auteur)
