Résumé : As the demographic situation and disease structures are very important as determinants of a health system and its finance, the authors will explain the actual situation of demographic and health statistics of Japan. The ageing and westernization of society have changed the disease structure from the acute to chronic diseases dominant patterns. Because of this dramatic change in demography and disease structures, we face a fundamental problem about how to reconstruct our social system. It is an emergent challenge how to reform the social security system in order to make it sustainable. (résumé d'auteur)
